Western Gulf of Mexico Planning Area Lease Sale 229 was held in New Orleans on November 28, 2012. Sale 229, just completed, resulted in 131 bids, by 13 companies, on 116 tracts, for a total of $157,683,267. The total sum of apparent winning bids was $133,767,074, on approximately 0.7 million acres.  The last western sale in 2011, Sale 218 resulted in 241 bids, by 20 companies, on 191 tracts, for a total of $712,725,998. The total sum of apparent winning bids was $337,688,341, on approximately 1.1 million acres.

The big players, in terms of number of tracts bid on, are:

  • ConocoPhillips Company - 63 bids
  • Chevron U.S.A. Inc. - 35 bids
  • BHP Billiton Petroleum (Deepwater) Inc. - 10 bids
  • Exxon Mobil Corporation - 8 bids

In terms of total amount exposed, we have:

  • Chevron U.S.A. Inc. - $61.2 million
  • ConocoPhillips Company - $52.4 million
  • BHP Billiton Petroleum (Deepwater) Inc. - $14.5 million
  • Anadarko US Offshore Corporation - $13.0 million
  • Exxon Mobil Corporation - $10.9 million

In terms of total amount of high bids, we have:
